In addition to the name of every person who lived in the household on June 1, the 1840 census provides the following information:

  • Number of free white males in various age groups (e.g. 0 to 5, 5 to 10...over 100, etc.)
  • Number of free white females in various age groups
  • Number of free colored males in various age groups
  • Number of free colored females in various age groups
  • Number of male slaves in various age groups
  • Number of female slaves in various age groups
  • Occupations of employed family members
  • Name and age of Revolutionary War pensioners
  • Number of deaf, dumb, blind and insane white persons
  • Number of deaf, dumb, blind and insane colored persons

I've listed the head of household below, along with any other information contained in the record.

This is possibly the Benjamin S. Arnold household. Assuming it is, I've indicated in parentheses below each person's name and age. However, Benjamin would be in the incorrect column since he would have been 34 years old in 1840. All other names match up with the 1850 census.

Benjamin Arnold:

  • One male under 5 (not sure who that would be)
  • Two males 5 and under 10 (William E., 8, and John, 9)
  • One male 10 and under 15 (Egbert, 11)
  • One male 20 and under 30 (possibly Benjamin S., but should be 34)
  • One female under 5 (Eglantine, newborn)
  • One female 30 and under 40 (Nancy, 34)
(The census columns supplying the following information are not included in the image)
  • No free colored persons
  • No slaves
  • Two people working in agriculture
  • No pensioners for revolutionary or military service
  • No persons who are deaf, dumb, blind or insane
